Exploring the Brain: Lucia Cantergiani’s Passion for Neuroscience
It was during a university lecture that Lucia Cantergiani first discovered her interest in neuroscience. Since then, that initial curiosity has grown into a dedicated path of study and research. A student in the Master’s degree program in Cellular and Molecular Biotechnology at the University of Trento, Lucia is currently completing her research internship in a laboratory developing RNA-based therapies for neurogenetic diseases. Looking ahead, she hopes to contribute to advancing scientific knowledge of conditions such as Parkinson’s disease. In this interview, she reflects on the choices that led her to neuroscience and shares what receiving a Fondazione Dompé scholarship means to her.
Why did you choose the Master’s degree program in Cellular and Molecular Biotechnology?
I chose this program mainly because it offers a specialization in Neurobiology. I have always been fascinated by the brain and nervous system, and I began exploring these subjects in greater depth during my undergraduate studies. In particular, I became interested in synaptic plasticity and the way this mechanism enables the formation of memories.
Can you tell us about your research internship?
I am currently completing my Master’s research internship at the Laboratory of RNA Biology and Biotechnology, led by Professor Michela Alessandra Denti at the University of Trento. I chose this laboratory because it focuses on developing RNA-based therapies for neurogenetic diseases. This is a highly innovative field, and I believe it is essential to dedicate time and research to advancing it.
What would you like to focus on in the future?
In the future, I would like to focus my research on Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative condition that has a profound impact on the quality of life of those affected and for which there is still no definitive cure.
What is the most valuable piece of advice you have ever received?
One of the most valuable pieces of advice I have ever received came from my grandfather. When he used to help me study physics in high school, he would always repeat a saying in the Veneto dialect: “Prima de parlar, tase” — essentially, “Think before you speak.” It is a lesson that has stayed with me and has proved useful throughout my university years.
What does receiving a Fondazione Dompé scholarship mean to you?
Receiving a Fondazione Dompé scholarship is a great honor. It is a recognition of the work I have put in to get this far, as well as a tangible sign of confidence in my journey and my potential. I see it as an important achievement, but above all as an incentive to continue giving my best in the years ahead.
