Where scientific knowledge meets impact: Martina Tomei’s journey in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology

For Martina Tomei, science matters most when it can be transformed into something that makes a real difference in people’s lives. This belief guided her decision to pursue a Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at the University of Bologna — a program that brings together scientific research, innovation and clinical application.

In this interview, Martina shares the motivations behind her academic journey, the scientific challenges that inspire her, and what receiving support from Dompé Foundation means to her as she prepares to build a future in biotechnology.

Why did you choose to study Pharmaceutical Biotechnology?
I chose the Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology because I wanted to build a connection between the laboratory and the patient. My goal was to turn the biological knowledge I gained during my Bachelor’s degree in Biology into something tangible, capable of being transformed into treatments for patients.

What makes this degree program innovative?
This degree program is innovative because it breaks down the walls between the lab and the industry. It trains you to be a very versatile figure, capable of following a drug’s journey at 360 degrees, from the initial idea to the design, through the large-scale development, that eventually reaches the patient.

What are your aspirations for the future?
I would like to work in the research and development of innovative and personalized therapies. Particularly the idea of being able to “train” the immune system so that it can heal itself is a scientific challenge that I would like to explore further.

What does receiving support from the Dompé Foundation mean to you?
Having someone cheering for you gives you a sense of security. Often, we students are the first to doubt our own abilities and knowing that an organization like the Dompé Foundation believes in our efforts transforms that insecurity into a source of motivation.
